Gietema is partner of KCAP in Rotterdam since 2002. He was born in Tjerkwerd (Friesland) in 1964 and studied Urban Design at the Delft University of Technology. As a student, he worked for UN Studio, West 8 and MVRDV, as well as teaming up with colleagues on urban design and planning projects. In 1999, he was awarded the Maaskant Award for young architects for this work. Gietema is currently connected to various educational institutions including the Delft and Berlin Universities of Technology, and the Academies for Architecture of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Arnhem. He regularly acts as a jury member for competitions, and is a member of the board of the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Art, Design and Architecture. Gietema joined KCAP in 1996 and became a director in 1999.
