ZURICH-NORD The subject of the proposed design was a center for mobility in the area near the Glatt shopping center in Wallisellen. The project brief foresees a tripartite, multi-functional building complex which would include such diverse sectors as information and retail, gas station and garage, and areas for public services. Essentially three approaches were developed in the design projects. One group envisioned large, free-standing, introverted building complexes as additions to the Glatt center. A second group proposed solutions which were functionally connected to the Glatt center but nonetheless, by deploying appropriate building types or by creating exterior and green spaces, lent the center for mobility its own distinct identity. A third group proposed free-standing buildings whose form responded to the functional and other particular demands of the program. Components were organized as independent elements within the built context of the city's edge or conjoined in a repetitive series of flexible modules.
