The Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi, opened in 1963, is an architectural expression of Swiss diplomacy in India and a symbol of a special political friendship between an old democracy and a young one. The Embassy building by Hans Hofmann and Walter Rüegg, and the Staff Quarters by Achyut Kanvinde and Shaukat Rai in the Embassy compound, show a deep engagement with local cultural, constructional and climatic conditions. Against the background of today’s ‘global architecture’, it is a model case.
On the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary, this outstanding example of prestige Swiss architecture and Swiss–Indian collaboration is celebrated here in a lavishly illustrated book, displaying the planning and construction history, as well as the political and cultural context. Essays by experts are accompanied by historical views of the building site and recent photographs of the architecture and the compound.
