Nowadays, the architect is seen primarily as an artist and creator, sometimes even as a ‘star’. ‘Service to society’ is no longer part of the debate. Both the cultural area north of the Alps and the period around 1700 offered themselves the opportunity to examine the change in the status and role of the architect. The volume deals with the competences of the architect at that time and his changing importance in artistic and social terms.
