The church in Altstetten, built between 1936 and 1941 by Werner Max Moser, is one of the key works of modern Swiss church architecture. Formally and conceptually, it bridges the gap between international modernism and the existing regional building tradition and is at the same time an early example of ‘building in context’. Prominently situated on a hill, it forms a harmonious ensemble with the old village church from the 15th century.
The architects Silvio Schmed and Arthur Rüegg continue this tradition with the careful restoration, some courageous interventions and an invisible extension.
