The Bernese architect belonged to the second generation of New Building and stood in unmistakable proximity to Le Corbusier, in whose studio he worked in 1930. His trade school buildings in Berne (1935–1939) became particularly well-known. His work, which is both a continuation and an antithesis of Bauhaus architecture, reflects the intensive search for a symbolic and sensual expression appropriate to the respective building task.
