Large, compact and profitable – these are the characteristics of ‘lumps’, the object of research, of the authors of the third BSA fellowship. From an unbiased point of view, this economically successful building type with a floor area of more than 3000 square metres and a hybrid programme can make a contribution to urban density. However, the spaces between the large buildings also present conceptual challenges. In their examination of the production conditions, qualities and deficits of realized projects, the authors identify the specific characteristics of the lumps and discuss the role and essential design tasks for architects in an increasingly complex planning environment.
