For Swiss architect and designer Otto Kolb (1921–1996), building represented a creative challenge, as did designing furniture. In 1948, he accepted a position at the Institute of Design in Chicago, where he worked for twelve years as an architect and university lecturer. After his return to Switzerland, he realized for himself and his family his main work, the extremely unconventional cylindrical glass house in Wermatswil. Many recurring themes in his buildings and projects converge here: traditional Japanese art, organic architecture and industrial building.
