Like hardly any other architect, Andrea Palladio (1508–1580) shaped a new architecture of his time, which spread throughout Europe as far as America and remains effective to this day. Werner Oechslin explores the phenomenon of Palladianism in two ways. First, he examines the conditions in Palladio’s own architecture, and then devotes himself to the various ways of dealing with Palladio’s role model, especially in Germany, France, Holland and England over the centuries to the present day.
