Hans Bernoulli shaped Switzerland’s cooperative and private settlement and housing like no other. The internationally influential Basler architect, urban planner, theorist and university lecturer was a homo politicus whose work was ethically motivated. After initial successes with commercial and residential buildings in Berlin and Central Germany, Hans Bernoulli soon made a name for himself with his urban development work. Appointed as chief architect of the construction company Basler Baugesellschaft in 1912, he became one of the pioneers of small housing development in Switzerland. In addition, he established urban planning as a subject area at ETH Zurich.
This publication places Hans Bernoulli’s life and work in a historical context. It locates the complexity of his work between political-economic reform and architectural-town planning discussions, thus internationally repositioning this important Swiss architect.
The monograph on Hans Bernoulli was written as part of a research project of the Master of Advanced Studies program of the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture.
