The guiding principles of modernity for a ‘functional city’ have had a decisive influence on today's built living space. But the city of the 20th century was never the only witness to purely rational design decisions. Their rooms have always been consciously designed as places for a human community. The Congrès Internationaux d’Architecture Moderne (CIAM) have interpreted the city far beyond its functional aspects. Even before the Second World War, they gave it a human face. In an unconventional working group of architects, urban planners, artists, historians and social scientists, they made public space a topos of planning as Heart of the City’.
