It’s time for a "Langstrassifizierung"!
Until recently, Langstrasse was still considered a problem area. The concentration of drug problems, prostitution, homelessness, criminality, dirt, noise, and dense traffic meant it was an intimidating example for many: just don’t let anywhere else become another Langstrasse! But, despite all of the problems, the Langstrasse neighborhood had a special quality that was difficult to find anywhere else: “urbanity,” the magical attribute of urban diversity and intensity.
Today, another neighborhood is sparking the urban design debate in Zurich: Seefeld. Here, many old apartment houses were bought up and replaced by luxury real estate. Longtime residents had to move out and make way for newcomers with more money, and the diverse neighborhood is now threatening to become a homogenous, high-priced yuppie enclave. Just don’t let anywhere else become another Seefeld! It`s time for a "Langstrassifizierung" (Langstrassification).
Students of Professor Kees Christiaanse and external experts in architecture, urban design, sociology, and art analyze the potentials of Langstrasse neighborhood and apply these to develop new urban design strategies for the Langstrasse neighborhood and other places in the city.
