Urban manufacturing has a positive impact on urban space and, in reverse, urban spaces are providing ideal condistions for urban manufacturing. However, in recent decades the reciprocal relationship between urban manufacturing (e.g. small-scale entrepreneurial activities)and urban space has lost much of its significance as small-scale manufacturing was replaced by large-scale retail and industries, and inner city production and consumption was moved to peripheral locations. Today, however, as our cities have passed from an industrial economy to a knowledge economy and from suburbanization to the so-called “urban renaissance”, urban manufacturing may once again play a vital role in driving the economic and urban developments of our cities. Thus we need a better understanding of these developments, central questions being: Who are the urban actors undertaking entrepreneurial activities in urban space? What urban conditions do they need to undertake these activities? And what qualities are they producing by means of their entrepreneurial practice?
