URBAN RESEARCH STUDIO - INTERDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOP

Re/Occupation

Shopping center, train stations, libraries, hotels, factories—what do all of these places have in common? You would think nothing, yet in these places strangers are in constant contact. They exchange a glance, speak to one another, trade or work together. They are not public spaces in the classic sense of the word, but they are spaces where there is a high level of public business and encounter.

The Ciudades Paralelas project invited artists to Zurich to develop theatrical interventions for everyday spaces such as these. By means of these interventions, the city becomes a stage, and its inhabitants, actors or the audience of an extraordinary piece of theater. Suddenly, one is more aware of everyday occurrences and more willing to encounter the unexpected. Can such interventions be designed specifically in order to increase the value of public space in the city? If so, which interventions would be the most effective? And how would urban or architectural space need to be designed so that these interventions can best succeed? In order to search for answers to these questions, we will be following the Ciudades Paralelas project in Zurich and examine its interventions using empirical research methods.

Course objectives

Applications, evaluation, and visualization of empirical research methods (participatory observation, interviews, filmed documentation, mapping).
