Public building

In an age that seems more interested in form than content we will research the possibilities of architecture to serve and represent society by designing a public building.

The programme consists of the different functions required by a small town of 20.000 inhabitants: town hall, library, theatre, combined with more commercial activities as shops, hotel+restaurant, apartments etc. These programmatic requirements are neither restrictive nor limitative but are merely used as the generator of the SPECIFIC and INDIVIDUAL concept of the architectural project that addresses the central hypothesis: Can architecture offer quality to legitimize any specific form?

The site of our project is existing; it is a central location on the main island of IJburg , an artificial archipelago between Amsterdam and Almere, that is being constructed at the moment.

Goal of the project is to develop a pluriform perspective on the formal qualities of architectural representation that can only be valued through the concrete elaboration of the project in it's physical condition.

Seminarweek in NL

As part of the programme we will travel to the Nederlands during seminarweek. We will study urban planning (historical and contemporary), architecture (Neutelings, Arets, OMA, SANAA, Claus en Kaan) and landscape (otterlo, polders).
The participation during Seminarweek is compulsory. (Costs: ca. 800 CHF)
