AN ARTS AND CINEMA COMPLEX IN LONDON

Illustration

DESIGN TASK SPRING SEMESTER 2012

The existing cinema complex is the leading repertory cinema in the UK specialising in seasons of classic, independent and non-English language films.

The complex was initially opened in a temporary building (the Telekinema) at the Festival of Britain in 1951 and moved to its present location in 1957, replacing the Thameside restaurant on the site. It is sited below the southern end of Waterloo Bridge, forming part of the cultural complex on the South Bank of the River Thames in London.

The complex has grown organically over time, so that the plan is both exciting and bad. Its large and small cinemas, videoteque, exhibition space, two very good bars, a restaurant and a terraces by the river, have great atmosphere.

We will look at what exists, hear the views and ambitions of the people who run the complex and then redesign it in the same exciting and complicated location.
