City as Resource — Designing New Qualities in the Metropolitan Region
The form of urbanization has changed radically over the last few years. Many new urban landscapes have emerged in the most varied places, which differ drastically from previous urban forms. Complexly structured polycentric metropolitan regions *more* are developing that sprawl far into what had once been rural areas. These new urban developments are highly multifarious and complex, on both a research perspective level as well as in practice. An additional consequence of this comprehensive transformation are processes that led to a loss of trusted urban forms.
Which new potentials lie in these urban processes? How will our built and living environment transform over time? Three typical test areas in the metropolitan region of Zurich (between the airport and city / the city center / developing areas at the border of the canton) will serve as a test area for which teams of students will develop different design scenarios and future projects based on precise observations of the actual situation and the pursued overall concepts. The objectives of the semester are the creation of radical projects and a comparative discussion on the chances and risks involved in the different projections of the future in the test areas as well as for the metropolitan region of Zurich. The results will form the basis and the main components of the NFP65 (New Urban Qualities), an interdisciplinary national research program at D-Arch.
