Letztes Jahr konnten wir mit einem Beitrag aus dem Special Urban Design Studio FS11 diesen Wettbewerb gewinnen!
Im Rahmen der "Future Cities Laboratory"-Zusammenarbeit zwischen der ETH und der National University Singapore bieten wir im FS12 wieder ein Special Urban Design Studio mit dem Titel "Vertical Cities Asia" an.
Hintergrund des Studios ist der Studentische Städtebauwettbewerb "Vertical Cities Asia" über Seoul, Südkorea, ausgelobt von der National University Singapore und der World Future Foundation.
Preamble Competition
"Everyone Ages"
Every year a one square kilometre territory will be the subject of the competition. This area, to house 100,000 people living and working, sets the stage for tremendous research and investigation into urban density, verticality, domesticity, work, food, infrastructure, nature, ecology, structure, and program - their holistic integration and the quest for visionary paradigm will be the challenges of this urban and architectural invention.
This new environment will have a full slate of live-work-play provisions, with the residential component making up to 50% of the total floor space.
In the second of this series of competitions, the theme of "Rapidly ageing societies in Asia" will be explored.
Population aging is unique in Asia given the speed at which it is occurring and the immense social and economic changes that the region is experiencing at the same time.
All across Asia, the number of people age 65 and above is expected to grow dramatically over the next 50 years. For the region as a whole, the population in this age group will increase by 314 percent - from 207 million in 2000 to 857 million in 2050. Changes that occurred over 50 years in the West are being compressed into 20 to 30 years in Asia.
The competition seeks innovative design solutions for a balanced environment for urban life addressing and anticipating the challenges of a rapidly ageing society. It encourages new positive approaches to ageing society that identify opportunities for maintaining capacities and well-being over the life course. Concepts such as "active aging" and "aging in place" with new approach to accessibility, social care and support for elderly are expected to affect design solutions and programs which exceed the standard community club repertoire and incorporate a range of opportunities to activate the elderly and bring them back to workforce, and to develop appropriate environments, especially the built environment, for both older and younger generations, which is crucial to successful ageing within the community.
Key issues of concern are: how to create an influential imagery and new concepts of living reflecting the de-stigmatized stand on elderly and ageing; how to encourage "active aging" and build up the competency and ability of the elderly to stay independent by providing holistic approach to supportive environments; how to allow "ageing-in-place" through inclusive and integrative design.
Site
The site is located in Yongshan, part of Seoul Metropolitan City, Republic of Korea.
Competition Objective
The objective of the competition is to seek a holistic solution or a new urban paradigm for a rapidly growing Asian city which also faces the issues of sustainability and quality of life that also addresses the increasing aging population in Asian cities.
Design Considerations
The design is about a high intensity and density Asian city that addresses its growing aging population. The design should consider the following issues holistically and integratedly.
Sustainability- The design should examine a closed loop paradigm, ecological and resilience attributes in their solution.
Quality of Life- The consideration for inclusiveness and sense of community.
Technical Innovation- The appropriate and innovative use of technology and technique.
Relationship to Context- Sensitive consideration of the place, climate and cultural context.
Feasibility- The rigour of the research and criticality of design in addressing the issues.
The international Design Jury will judge the submissions along the abovementioned.

Zwei der erarbeiteten Entwürfe haben - bei entsprechender Qualität - die Möglichkeit an der Schlussjury aller Universitäten in Singapore teilzunehmen. Dort gibt es dann auch Preise für die drei erstrangierten Entwürfe.
Bei Interesse meldet Euch bitte bei mir mit kurzem Motivationsschreiben und Arbeitsproben bis zum 18. Januar 2012! (kretschmann @ arch.ethz.ch). Wir werden aus allen Bewerbungen eine Auswahl von 12 Studenten (6 Teams) machen. Zusätzlich noch 2 Teams als Nachrücker.
Bis zum 19. Januar werden wir Euch das Ergebnis der Auswahl mitteilen können. Das weitere Vorgehen erfahrt Ihr dann per Mail. Also bitte regelmässig Eure Mails checken.
Organisatorisches
Das Studio wird koordiniert von der Professur Christiaanse und zusammen mit der Professur Brillembourg/Klumpner betreut, begleitet von interdisziplinären Entwurfsworkshops mit anderen Professuren.
Die maximale Teilnehmerzahl des Special Urban Design Studio - Seoul ist 12. Es soll in 2er-Teams gearbeitet werden. Bewerbt euch daher unbedingt schon als 2er-Teams bei uns.
Wir werden während der Seminarwoche für einen Entwurfsworkshop nach Seoul fliegen. Die Kosten für diesen Workshop in Südkorea werden bei ca. 1200.- CHF (+/-10%) pro Person liegen.
Euer Pass sollte noch mindestens 6 Monate gültig sein.
Für das Entwurfsstudio gibt es 13+3 (integrierte Disziplin Städtebau) Kreditpunkte, für den Workshop 2 Kreditpunkte (als Seminarwoche).
Abgabe des Wettbewerbs ist der 30.6.2012. Daher wird es nach der Schlusskritik Ende Mai eine noch ca. 4 wöchige Überarbeitungsphase geben. Diese kann als integrierte Disziplin angerechnet werden.
