SEMINAR WEEK HS10

IMAGES OF THE CITY

Taking pictures with Joël Tettamanti

Contrary to architectural photography, which often focuses on the presentation of objects, this seminar concentrates on the city itself. But how to take pictures of the city, where we live? The urban network is a product, shaped by conscious and unconscious decisions. At the same time, the city is the catalyst and environment for the lived, the stored, the saved, and the thought.

We make the city and the city makes us.

Consequently, the way in which we perceive the urban phenomenon needs to be constantly renewed and discussed. Photography in a means of achieving this. What do we what to capture when we take a picture of an urban situation? We will reflect on this question for one week.

For one week, selected areas in the metropolitan area of Zurich will serve as a resource for images that we will create under the guidance of the professional photographer, Joël Tettamanti (www.tettamanti.ch). Basic knowledge of photography and the fundaments of composition are part of the course. By observation and discussion, we want to move beyond the snapshot picture and create expressive images that present the complexity of urban space, allowing its beauty and force of expression to unfold. The public can view the photographs in a subsequent exhibition.
