Eine Neue Architekturfakultät für Basel
Die Universität Basel plant derzeit die Gründung einer neuen Fakultät für «Kunst und Architektur». Auf Grund des Stellenwerts und der Bedeutung der bestehenden Architekturfakultäten der ETH und der EPFL stellt diese Neugründung in der akademischen Landschaft der Schweiz eine kleine Revolution dar. Im Gegensatz zu diesen beiden Architekturfakultäten, die letztendlich aus einer technischen Tradition erwachsen, wird die Basler Architekturfakultät durch das humanistische und kunstwissenschaftliche Fundament der Universität Basel geformt werden.
Neben der Entwicklung von architektonischen Entwürfen für diese neue Fakultät erlaubt uns das Thema sich mit zentralen Aspekten unserer Disziplin zu beschäftigen: Wie wird Architektur gelehrt? Welche kurrikularen Konzepte gibt es? Welchen Einfluss haben die Gebäude und die Arbeitsräume auf die Lehre die in diesen Räumen stattfindet? Welche Rolle kann eine Architekturfakultät in einer Stadt einnehmen, beispielsweise als Vermittler von architektonischem Wissen an eine breite Öffentlichkeit oder als städtebaulicher Motor für ein Quartier? Das Projekt einer neuen Architekturfakultät ist ein Thema bei dem wir alle - Studierende sowie Lehrende - eigentlich Experten sind, denn tagtäglich müssen wir uns damit auseinandersetzen, oder sind den Einflüssen dieser Räumlichkeiten ausgesetzt. Dieser Entwurf gibt uns die Möglichkeit unser ‹latentes› Expertenwissen praktisch umzusetzen, aber zuvor theoretisch und analytisch zu überprüfen und zu fundieren.
Die ideale zeitliche Konstellation dieses Entwurfs, exakt parallel zur eigentlichen Entwicklung der neuen Fakultät gibt uns die Möglichkeit mit unseren Entwürfen den Prozess an der Universität Basel zu beeinflussen und aktiv an diesem Prozess teilzunehmen. (Die Leitung der Universität Basel ist über unser Entwurfsprojekt informiert und unterstützt dieses.) Bei der Erarbeitung des Entwurfs steht neben zeichnerischen und fotografischen Methoden das (Arbeits-) Modell im Vordergrund. Das Prozesshafte der Entwurfsentwicklung soll ebenfalls hervorgehoben werden. Die Arbeit erfolgt in Einzel- oder Zweierteams. Für das Projekt werden spezifische Grundstücke zur Wahl gestellt.
The University of Basel plans to establish a new faculty for “Art and Architecture”. As of the prestige and importance of the existing architecture faculties at the ETH and the EPFL, this foundation represents a small revolution within the academic landscape of Switzerland. In contrast to those two faculties that have developed from a technical tradition, the Basel faculty will be shaped by the university’s tradition in the humanities and the arts.
Besides developing architectural proposals for the new faculty, the topic allows us to deal with central aspects that define our discipline: How is architecture being taught? Which influence to the buildings and studio spaces have on the teaching that takes place within? What urban role can a faculty of architecture occupy within a city, for example as a mediator of architectural knowledge for a broad population, or as an urbanistic motor within a neighborhood? The project for a new faculty of architecture is a topic for which we all - students as well as tutors - are in actual fact experts, as we are exposed to their spaces, or have to deal with these issues on a daily basis. Working on these designs will give us the opportunity to implement our ‘latent’ expert knowledge on a practical level, while having first questioned and substantiated it theoretically and analytically.
The ideal constellation of this project, coinciding perfectly with the actual development of the faculty, gives us the possibility of participating and influencing this process at the University of Basel with our designs. (The head of the university is informed about our project and supports it.) Apart from methods of representation such as drawing and photography the design studio will emphasize the (working) model. The processual nature of designing will also be focused on. Students work individually or in teams of two. A choice of specific sites for the building will be provided.
