The project “SUPat” bundles the diverse capabilities and methods of designers, planners, scientists and simulation tools to derive at convincing sustainable urban patterns.
The group of Prof. Dr. Gerhard Schmitt, Chair for Information Architecture, explores new methods for collaborative decision-making in urban planning and procedural methods in application to urban design. Further, the chair manages the ETH Value Lab (http://www.valuelab.ethz.ch), a high-end visualization and modelling space for transdisciplinary research, teaching and interaction with stakeholders.
Prof. Dr. Adrienne Grêt-Regamey leads the research unit “Planning of Landscape and Urban Systems” focussing on developing and testing decision-support and planning systems for sustainable spatial development. In particular new instruments for integrating the value of ecosystem services into parametric, shape grammar driven digital 3D models for sustainable urban design are explored.
Prof. Dr. Thomas F. Rutherford at the Centre for Energy Policy and Economics works on applications of computational equilibrium models in economic policy analysis. He made several innovations in the field of computational economics applications in economics, ranging from international trade to health economics.
Directed by Prof. Dr. Michel Bierlaire, the Transport and Mobility Laboratory is active in modelling, optimization and simulation of transportation systems, with a specific emphasis on the mobility of individuals.
Prof. Dr. Roland W. Scholz holds the Chair of Environmental Sciences and is specialized in decision sciences and system analysis, cognitive and organizational psychology, and environmental modelling, evaluation and risk assessment. He focuses on aspects such as sustainable urban development, collaboration, participation and transdisciplinarity.
Prof. Dr. Angelus Eisinger is Professor for Metropolitan History and Culture at HafenCity University in Hamburg. His research and teaching activities focus on cross-disciplinary analyses of historical and contemporary architecture developments, urban planning and urban design issues. In addition he leads “Perimeter Stadt”, an interdisciplinary research unit in Zurich, transferring research insights to actual planning practices and recommendations.
The Urban Design Group introduces critical realism into the process and intervenes at defined points in each phase. It consists of individuals and teams with high familiarity with the project goals and with the necessary technological understanding.
The knowledge and technology transfer of the Urban Design Group is extensive: Franz Eberhard as the long-standing Director of Zurich’s Urban Development Office has led, among others, the planning of New Oerlikon or Zurich West. Silva Ruoss was also involved in the planning of New Oerlikon and consults several communities in urban development. Piet and Wim Eckert have won first prize for the Escher Wyss Areal Masterplan in Zurich. Hosoya Schäfer Architects are internationally recognized based on a high impact combination of planning and new media. EM2N have a long record of urban planning and architectural interventions from Inner Mongolia to Zurich.
