WP9 – Science to Market

The Science to Market (WP9) work package consists of five main tasks: (a) market analysis, business model, product definition, (b) development/ enhancement of fit for the market assessment tools (the modified specialized model e.g. Building Stock Model or Climate Model) as consultant tools for climate mitigation, (c) development of a fit for the market Integrated tool for climate mitigation and adaptation, (d) development/ enhancement of NextGen Products (e) training, methodologies and project products.

The primary objectives are (i) to develop mitigation tools, information and education for the governmental/ administrative sector on city scale levels, (ii) to create favourable conditions for business opportunities, and (iii) to open activities to preparing market in other sectors. The knowledge derived from the scientific tasks could also be used to promote adjustments of regulations and provide feedback for re-investigation of extremes events.

This innovation-oriented WP will be divided into four tasks.

Market analysis, product definition, business model

  • The potential markets for the products developed within this project are diverse on several levels (e.g. scale of cities, climate and culture). In order to specifically tailor this projects output to the market demands several sides of potential applications are aimed for. Some market studies already exist but have to be expanded.
  • Based on the results of the market studies the exact layout of the fit for the market products will be defined.
  • Business models are to be developed for individual spin offs as well as for the integrated model (the warehouse as a sales product) and NextGen products.

Assessment/ consultant tools for climate mitigation

  • All specialized modules (e.g. BPM, transport module, climate model) will be available as fit for the market tools for consultant activities of individual Spin offs
  • The work done and the insights and data generated within this project will add value for all existing ETH spin-offs (currently TEP Energy and regioConcept)

Integrated tool for climate mitigation and adaptation

  • The Data warehouse/ scenario warehouse for cities will be available as a product for cities in order to better assess their specific situation and potential. This product will include Rule sets / guideline catalogue for sustainable urban planning.
  • Based on this product IBM will offer their System integrator and be able to conduct resilence tests for cities as a business service.

NextGen Products

  • The databases and rule set generated within this product will result in added value for IBM (NextGen IBM Intelligent Operations Center) and Esri Procedural AG (NextGen CityEngine). They will be able to better model side effects of their scenarios as well as extend their services.
  • The Cityengine will profit from the project backside (by being better linked to data- and rule sets) as well as frontside (by being more user friendly and allowing intuitive manipulation)

Training, methodologies and project products

This task will first disseminate the expertise (from all partners) across the SUA project. This takes the form of training and workshops and will be coupled with WP1.
Workshops and professional training and exchange sessions will be organized, in order to promote the business models and enable to participating experts to better understand the sectors represented by the other parties. Training includes introduction and schooling of potential customers to the possibilities, limits and application of the generated products.

This training will provide business opportunities to academic and SME and LSE partners for knowledge dissemination.
