assignment 1 | project idea | drawing | to the screen | to the machine | to the box | to the prints |

hokusai's box

I wanted this project's form to be based on a very clear handworking tradition, while the manufacturing would be obviously machine made. The objective is to create a feeling of wonder of this hand/machine relationship and antique/modern relationship.

woodblock prints

The object of the woodcut is very much based in old technology, but has followed us along the way into modernity. Wood has been replaced by plastic and woodcut prints by computer prints. Now I am interested in turning the table: in having the computer create woodblock plates.

the box

Hokusai's box is actually a book. Japanes books were in fact bound to be pulled out like a giant screen. The woodblock prints would be bound together by a leather band.
