Fabricating Oman - Production, Construction, Distribution

Leon Faust, Benedikt Zweifel

A prevalent indicator of the dramatic development in Oman the last decades is the fast change of pace. With the extraction of oil and gas entirely new modes of mobility have become possible, and the change in urban infrastructure is significant. The initiation of the production industry in Oman was generated by the whole development around the oil and gas industry, but there are a lot of things one should try to understand behind these reserves and their exploitation, after all, these industries remain the main source of income for the country and the state: revenues make the base of the capital funding all the investments in infrastructure and in the social sector in Oman (there are no taxes on labor for example). Industrial production has advanced modestly and its produce has been dedicated for the local market with the goal to minimize the country’s dependency on import, hence not contributing to the export revenues to any extend. However the question of production, and employment, is a crucial one for a city of the Arab Gulf. This is a try to understand the resources available, and the extent to which they are participating in the economic structure and strategy, as well as the social aspects of working and living entailed therein, the distribution of goods, and how companies and trade are organized.
