LEARNING AND HEALTH

Student: Hans Leidescher

Health and education are usually two of the most central ‘services’ organized by humanitarian organizations in other refugee camps. (Clinics often run by MSF, schools often run by CARE or others.) The fact that these services are administrated and managed by the refugees and its representatives themselves is significant. What is the relationship between incoming aid and the way that ‘resources’ like medical services and education are distributed?
How are activities of health and learning organized? What kind of spaces do they require and do they create? Where do the inhabitants of the camps go to school? Where do they go for medical treatment? What kind of range of services and education levels are offered and how are they spatially organized?
How is the fact that the refugees now live in a very concentrated space (in contrast to their former homeland) influence the level and quality  of services offered. How has the cultural shift, i.e. from a more rural and nomadic society to a settled society, impacted on activities of learning and health?
