The thesis takes up the current discussion about urban sprawl in the canton Appenzell to set up an alternative strategy. In this strategy, sprawl is not considered as per se negative, but as a typical Appenzeller way of dealing with the landscape. Connecting this approach to current approaches towards sustainability, for example on the fields of energy and mobility, new possibilities are shown how the “cultural landscape” of the Appenzell can be further developed, thus enabling to link successful strategies from the past with new technologies. The master thesis was coordinated with the research focus on “Kulturlandschaften”.
