The thesis deals with possibilities of the “inner densification” of light industrial sites towards mixed-use areas. The areas Dietlikon South in the Glatt valley and Urdorf North in the Limmat valley were chosen as examples for the development of such sites. Although they possess a high centrality, these areas are usually perceived as a backyard by the according municipalities. This fact, and the large-scale parcels point towards possibilities of unproblematic densification. As a positive effect of housing, the preservation of small-scale entrepreneurial structures is expected – in Zurich, such firms are more and more pushed from more central locations.
