Schwarzwald
Students: Tommaso Giovannoli and Hermes Killer
The site of interest for this group covers the southern slopes of the Schwarzwald between the upper Wiesental and the Rhine, the Markgräflerland with its gentle hills and vineyards, and the beginning oft the fertile Rheinebene. The project proposes a new structure for the chaotic mix of infrastracture marking the importance of the region on one of the main North South trade routes through Europe, and the sprawling settlements on the Niederterrasen which extends the built up fabric of Basel far into the German Rheinebene. Working with the specific vegetation and the characteristic topography, that characterize the emblematic surrounding landscapes the project introduces a strong rhythm of built und un-built areas that assigns areas for further growth as well as limits the current development. The pattern does reflect the origin of the historic settlements and introduces new landscape elements that connect the southern Schwarzwald beyond the Niederterrassen to the French Sundgau, its geological complement.
