The Apennine Water Cisterns - Landscape and water in Rieti
Students: Barbara Waltert, Michaela Gisler
The region around Rieti - formerly known as Sabina – is exceptionally rich in water and has served, since antiquity, as one of the important drinking water source for Rome. Originally, from Sabine watershed, water had been transported through a system of aqueducts; parts of these monumental public works are still in use today. This water resource has even gained in importance during the XX century when modern water system was introduced, allowing the transport of drinking water over large distances; the Rieti province thus becoming the main water provider for Rome. Within our territorial taxonomy, the work addresses the notions: territory as a FORM, a PRODUCT, and a PROJECT. This would unfold into a research on: the hydrogeology of Rieti, the engineering techniques for water treatment and transport, and the governance of the system in terms of water management and policies.
